Steve Harwell, the lead singer and the co-founder of Smash Mouth, formed the band in 1994. The death of Harwell has been confirmed by the band manager Robert Hayes. According to his statement, the ‘I’m a Believer’ singer has died at his home in Boise “surrounded by family and friends.” Due to some medical complications, Harwell has been under medical supervision. Hayes also mentioned that according to the doctors, the cause of his death was liver failure.

In an interaction with the media, Hayes said Harwell “passed peacefully and comfortably.” And during this conversation, he gave a lengthy tribute to the artist. Hayes added, “Steve has been retired from Smash Mouth for two years now, and the band continues to tour with new vocalist Zach Goode,” Continuing further he added, “That said, Steve’s legacy will live on through the music. With Steve, Smash Mouth has sold over 10 Million albums worldwide and topped the charts with two #1 hit singles, five Top 40 singles, three Hot 100 singles, four Billboard 200 albums, and a Grammy nomination not to mention the hundreds of film and television placements and of course those musical features in Shrek.”

He also added, “Steve’s iconic voice is one of the most recognizable voices from his generation. He loved the fans and loved to perform. Steve Harwell was a true American original. A larger-than-life character who shot up into the sky like a Roman candle.” Concluding with, “Steve lived a 100 percent full-throttle life. Burning brightly across the universe before burning out.”

He has always struggled with alcoholism and in 2013 he was diagnosed with a heart ailment called cardiomyopathy. And following his heart health he also developed a neurological condition as well. This neurological condition has affected his memory and speech. But the final decision to take a retirement from the band came after he appeared for a performance in upstate New York, completely intoxicated. The video of that performance showed he was slurring his words and also shouting at the audience.

On 3rd September Smash Mouth’s long-time manager, Robert Hayes confirmed his death to the media. Harwell’s fiancée was taking care of him along with the hospice care. Harwell was born in California in 1967 and started his rapping career with his unforgettable rhyme F.O.S. (Freedom of Speech). He preferred the sample-heavy beats of Chuck D and Public Enemy, and he made music based on these beats.
