Salim Merchant and his team took a heartfelt trip to Jiaganj, Arijit Singh’s hometown. He was there to record ‘Sukoon’, a track for the Bhoomi project. The season proved to be more than just music. It felt like a spiritual moment for both the artists. Arijit welcomed them warmly into his home, and together they created music that touches the heart. The song draws its title from a powerful quote by Maula Ali, reminding us that true peace lives inside human beings, not outside. Every note of ‘Sukoon’ carries that feeling. The song will serve as a reminder to pause and breathe. The song will tell listeners to find stillness in their own hearts.

Salim Merchant, part of the popular musical duo Salim–Sulaiman, shared the heart-touching philosophy behind the song. He said, “This song we composed was a reflection of a quote by Maula Ali, which said that everything that you’re looking for, all boils down to happiness in this world, whether it’s through fame, through money, through success, through whatever. And all this happiness that you’re looking for outside actually lies within you. All the questions that you have, their answers lie within you. All the illness that you have in your body, all the remedies of that illness also lie within you. Only you have to just look inside.” This unfeigned and deep meaning is what helped the musician create ‘Sukoon’. However, bringing this vision to life with Arijit Singh took time and quiet persistence.

Salim claims his messages went unseen at first as Arijit was caught up in a packed schedule of his own. Then one day, a message came from a new phone number. It was Arijit himself who said he was open and ready to finally create something heart-touchingly beautiful together. “He said, ‘Sir, this is Arijit. I’m ready to sing some of your songs. Sir come to Jiaganj.’ We discussed this in December and fixed a date in January.” The trip from Bombay to Jiaganj took almost nine hours, but Salim was instantly taken by the charm and calm of the place. He said, “I left Bombay in the morning and reached there around 9.30 to 10 at night. I loved it there! This place has a different energy. Its frequency is different from the city. There’s a certain kind of calmness.”

The next morning, Salim and his team stepped into Arijit’s studio, and the song-making process began. The space felt calm and warm for the musicians, and it was filled with creative energy. “The Tanpura was playing and Arijit was doing his riyaz. He was having a hot Kada and we had hot Kada with him.” Before recording, they spent time just talking about music and tech, sharing ideas like old friends. Arijit gave them a tour of his studio, showing every corner with pride. They wrapped it up with a slow lunch and tea, letting the creative energy flow naturally.

Arijit then took his guests around his hometown to embrace the local culture there. Salim recalled, “He took us to a place where there’s a ground. We played a little badminton there. And there’s a cricket ground there. We saw that too. We met some people from Jiaganj — some players and kids who were learning cricket.” That easy, happy vibe set the tone for what came next. The recording flowed effortlessly, full of heart and connection. They spent only a day in Jiaganj, but it felt special. Salim concluded with his reflection on the project by saying, “The song is really about sukoon — peace and contentment. We had a great time. Just one day we spent there. Next day we had a show, so we left. But what a beautiful experience.”
