Charli XCX is stepping into a louder and more rebellious era with her upcoming single ‘Rock Music’, and the teaser alone has already sent fans into full speculation mode. Shared on Instagram on Thursday, May 7, the short black and white clip captures the singer destroying an electric guitar beneath a pair of towering black stilettos. The camera only focuses on her feet, but the visual still carries a chaotic energy that perfectly matches the distorted guitars and crashing drums heard in the background. With one sharp stomp, the guitar’s neck and body snap apart, setting the tone for what could become one of her most aggressive releases so far.

The teaser arrives after weeks of online hints about Charli’s next chapter, with the singer continuously dropping clues about experimenting with a rougher and edgier sound. Alongside the visual, she wrote, “rock music. song and video out tonight. 9pm pst,” officially confirming both the release date and the arrival of the accompanying music video. The announcement quickly sparked conversations across social media, especially among fans curious to see how far Charli plans to push her sonic identity after the massive success of Brat.

Speculation around the artist’s creative direction first intensified in April during her interview with British Vogue. The publication revealed one of the upcoming track’s lyrics, which reads, “I think the dance floor is dead, so now we’re making rock music.” The line immediately triggered assumptions that Charli was abandoning her club-driven electronic style in favor of something heavier and more guitar-focused. Since then, listeners have been dissecting every teaser and cryptic post for clues about her next move.Speaking about her evolving creative process, Charli explained, “If I’d made another album that felt more dance-leaning, it would have felt really hard, really sad.” She added, “What’s interesting for me is to bend the possibilities of what my perspective on that could be.” Her comments reflected an artist searching for reinvention instead of comfort, something that has remained central to her career for years.

Still, the singer later clarified that fans should not expect a complete genre transformation. In a playful Instagram post shared from the studio, she wrote, “a video of me making a song called ‘rock music’ that is not actually rock music which is funny because i never said i was making a rock album.” The statement only deepened the mystery surrounding the track and made the rollout even more entertaining to follow.

‘Rock Music’ marks Charli’s first major release since her Wuthering Heights companion album dropped in February and reached No. 8 on the Billboard 200. Before that, Brat peaked at No. 3 and became one of the defining pop records of the year, pushing Charli further into mainstream recognition while preserving the unpredictable edge that continues to separate her from everyone else in pop music.
