Gordon Matthew Thomas Sumner, better known as Sting, turns 75 on October 2nd, 2026, and it is a moment of celebration for all the fans. This veteran English artist is a singer, songwriter, actor, and an all-round performer with a versatile and creative psyche. He is a former member of the band ‘Police’ who embarked on his solo career in 1985. His genre-bending creations include elements of rock, jazz, classical, new-age, reggae, and many others.
Music Career
Sting grew up in the area of Wallsend shipyard on the River Tyne, which made a huge impact on his music. By the age of 10, he was highly fascinated by a Spanish guitar left behind by an immigrant friend of his father, and that could be considered the first spark of his music career. He could not complete his own University degree but was able to become a teacher later on, which diversified his experience and musical skills.

What started with jazz sessions in the evenings quickly turned into a creative exploration along with the Police. In 1977, the artist joined forces with Henry Padovani and Stewart Copeland to create the band, which was later joined by Andy Summers. Within 5 years, from 1978 to 1983, the band successfully dropped multiple projects, and within a short duration they managed to get five UK chart-topping albums along with 6 Grammy Awards and 2 Brit Awards. Although the band did not last long, the five albums offered by the band are still considered to be among the best Brit punk projects ever made. In 2007, the band reformed again for a short while due to the Reunion Tour, but Sting’s solo career started in 1985.
Sting’s first solo album project was ‘The Dream of the Blue Turtles’, for which he collaborated with many talented jazz artists, namely, Kenny Kirkland, Omar Hakim, Darryl Jones, and Branford Marsalis. The solo creations added more charm to his work, and some of the finest examples are “Fortress Around Your Heart”, “If You Love Somebody Set Them Free”, “Love Is the Seventh Wave”, etc to name some. The album received a huge amount of attention and awards, which further paved the way for Sting’s solo career, which is still ongoing with more creations.
Discography
Sting has a massive discography as the artist kept dropping new album projects every other year. Such a dynamic and wide range of musical creations with its genre-bending poetic elements further establishes the artist’s dedication to his craft with unbridled creativity. This year marks four decades of his solo music career, and his last released project was ‘The Bridge ’ in 2021.

Till now, Sting has dropped a total of 15 full-length album projects, and each of them offers a distinctively different taste from another. Philanthropic work
Music is one of the greatest voices of rebels, and Sting was a rebel himself with his activism and philanthropic work, with or without the support of the government. His primary focus was indigenous rights, human rights, and nature conservation. He created the Rainforest Fund with Brazilian tribe leaders Chief Raoni and also supported Amnesty International for social activism and human rights. He participated in many non-profit shows like Conspiracy of Hope tour, Secret Policeman’s Ball, Band Aid Tour and others. The artist supports more than 150 charities all over the world.
