The newly instituted honor of the Bhupen Hazarika Rashtriya Award will be presented soon at the legendary artist’s birth centenary celebration, which is taking place at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi, on November 29. The Assam Government has already announced the celebrations through the Chief Minister of the state, Himanta Biswa Sarma, and it has been declared that the first recipient of this honorable award would be veteran singer Usha Mangeshkar.

The State Cabinet meeting took place at Lok Sewa Bhawan on Friday, and during the press briefing, Sarma said that the honorable award will be recognizing musical talents such as internationally acclaimed singers, music composers, producers and musicians, as well as directors, actors and all kinds of professionals from the entertainment industry who helped to flourish the state as well as the country’s cultural aspects. It is apt as Hazarika has also demonstrated his exceptional excellence in the creative and cultural field.

The award is scheduled to be presented by the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, and comes with prize money of Rs 10 lakh along with a citation. This special honor will be conferred every three years to recognize the individuals who have excelled in their respective fields and gained international attention. Just like Bhupen Hazarika has offered evergreen contributions in the field of music and cinema, this award will recognize the established personas who have enriched the Indian entertainment industry.

The event on November 29 is set to honor the contributions of the Bharat Ratna awardee, along with musical performances based on Hazarika’s works. Sarma said that the program will run for 2 hours, during which the award ceremony will take place for 45 minutes, followed by a one-hour-long musical performance by legendary singers like Shreya Ghoshal, Shankar Mahadevan, as well as other talented music artists from Assam.

There will be a special performance of Hazarika’s song ‘manuhe manuhar babe’ performed by 1000 children. The Chief Minister also said that the event will be holding around 5000 people at the venue which includes the members from all the organizations related to Bhupen Hazarika, his representatives, charities and institutions.

Sarma also added that the upcoming event will be arranged in cooperation with the government and non-government organizations as well as non-govt. sponsorships in order to facilitate a grand celebration of Hazarika’s 100th Birth Anniversary. Bhupendra Kumar Hazarika died on

5 November, 2011, at the age of 85 years, yet the legend continues to live eternally with a creative and cultural path that he paved with his contributions.
