South Korean President Moon Jae-in has announced on Tuesday that he appointed the famous K-pop group BTS as the special presidential envoy for his visit to the UN.
The members of the group received diplomatic passports and fountain pens from the president after the ceremony.
BTS had recently participated in the Permission to Dance challenge, which was arranged for hearing impaired people. The president thanked the group for it and also congratulated them for their three awards at the MTV Music Awards.
Their official duties as special presidential envoy start with accompanying President Moon to the US for his visit between September 19th and 23rd. They will also be attending the 76th session of the UN General Assembly organized in New York. They will attend the second meeting of the SDG Moment. Its main objective is to highlight the international community’s efforts to bring solutions for different global problems like climate issues, worldwide hunger, and poverty.
The theme of this year’s General Assembly is, ‘building resilience through hope to recover from COVID-19, rebuild sustainability, respond to the needs of the planet, respect the rights of people, and revitalize the United Nations’.
The South Korean Government has selected BTS to attend the General Assembly because they think it will be successful at communicating with the future generation and bring their attention to the serious issues around the world.
RM from BTS said that they are considering the title of special presidential convoy an honor as it lets them impact the future generation and culture. They continuously want to give back the love they have received from the world. They are very happy to receive the opportunity that has been given by the special presidential convoy.
BTS has visited the UN before with President Moon in 2018 and 2020. In 2018 RM gave a speech titled ‘Speak Yourself’ talking about self-love and empowerment. The president talked about denuclearization efforts in his speech. The group gave a speech online at the 75th session of the UN General Assembly, encouraging the audience, struggling in the pandemic.
