Taiwanese K-pop star Chou Tzu-yu, better known as Tzuyu, has found herself at the center of fresh speculation about her future in the entertainment industry, with reports suggesting that China could be looking to attract the Twice member as her current contract with JYP Entertainment approaches its end.

A Straits Exchange Foundation official has warned that Taiwanese entertainers who give in to political pressure in exchange for greater access to China’s entertainment market rarely enjoy lasting success. The comments come amid growing rumors that Chinese authorities may be offering Tzuyu opportunities to build a career in the country.

Tzuyu is the only Taiwanese member of the South Korean girl group Twice. Her contract with JYP Entertainment is expected to expire at the end of this year, and speculation has been building that she may choose not to renew. According to reports, the singer is considering pursuing a solo career through her parents’ agency, Yu Hai Entertainment.

At the same time, Chinese media reports claim that China has offered to support Tzuyu’s career development in its entertainment market. The reported opportunities could include access to television and broadcasting projects, concerts and talent agencies. However, these opportunities are said to come with a political condition, with reports suggesting that Tzuyu would be expected to publicly support Beijing’s “one China” principle and state that “Taiwanese are Chinese.”

Straits Exchange Foundation Secretary General Luo Wen-jia said China has spent the past decade using a combination of incentives and pressure to influence Taiwanese entertainers working in its market. Speaking to the Liberty Times, he said artists can see their work abruptly stopped if they refuse to follow government demands, while those who cooperate may receive greater access to the Chinese market.

Luo also argued that such opportunities often have a limited lifespan. According to him, entertainers who cooperate with political expectations may experience a career peak in China, only to see that momentum disappear once they are no longer considered useful. He described the strategy as part of China’s broader “united front” efforts, which he said extend beyond entertainers to politicians, influencers and media commentators.

Amid the speculation surrounding her next career move, Tzuyu has addressed fans directly through the paid fan platform Bubble. Rather than confirming or denying the reports, she asked supporters to remain patient and wait for official news about her plans. “I know there are all kinds of rumors circulating online, but even so, you’ve been willing to patiently wait for me until I can come back with new work,” she wrote.

“You don’t need to worry too much. Just cheering me on means so much to me. Your support gives me the strength to work harder and keep moving forward. I’m always so grateful to you all,” she said. For now, Tzuyu’s message suggests that she is focused on her music and the support of the fans who have followed her journey from Twice to the possibility of a new solo era.
