The Swedish songwriter and producer, Fredrik Lindström, widely known as Second Choice, is generating a buzz among all with his track ‘By the Blackened Fern’ featuring Dimi De San. The excellent music creation is reaching out to many audiences. The brilliant composition and exceptional presentation have added a charm to the track. And that is what captivated more audiences within a brief time. Recently, we got the chance to have a chat with him, and this is how it went-

DMR: Hello, Second Choice, congratulations on your new song, ‘By the Blackened Fern’. What has been your experience of it?
Second Choice: Hello, and thank you. My overall experience has been that the process around the song felt quite organic. Kind of like you get a simple idea and try to build something around it and see where it goes. If that makes any sense.
DMR: Where did you get the inspiration for making this track?
Second Choice: The initial inspiration was that I was trying out a new guitar a Jazzmaster baritone with a 30 inch scale length that was tuned down an octave compared to a normal guitar. That provided a different sonic space than with my usual guitars so I started experimenting with different riffs and came up with a couple that I felt had kind of a vintage folk-horror vibe to them and decided to build a song around that.
DMR: How was your journey of preparing this song?
Second Choice: I wish I could say it was deliberate and well thought out but it wasn’t. It was more of a one idea leads to an other. It started off with a couple of simple guitar riffs and I started to build around that. In a way it kind of felt like when I was playing in bands and we started jamming, but the difference is that now I was alone in my home studio playing all parts myself so its not the optimal setting for a jam but on this song it kind of felt that way anyway.
DMR: You have collaborated with Dimi De San. How was it working with her?
Second Choice: I have worked with her in the past and Its always a pleasure working with her, she is so creative and talented so it makes collaboration very smooth and easy. The usual process when I work with her since we do not live in the same country is that I make a rough mix and send it to her. She start working on lyrics and the vocals and sends me a demo of what she have come up with. Then I get the stems of the vocals and start mixing. Often I also go back to the arrangement and see what fits with the vocals, I think vocals are very important so I try to arrange my songs in a way that the other instruments support the vocals and not try to compete so if I have to make changes to make more room for the vocals that is just a part of the process.
DMR: Why did you go for this specific collaboration for this track?
Second Choice: I have collaborated with Dimi in the past and she have always been great to work with, I think I also have a pretty decent idea of what she can do with her vocals so I thought that she would be the right choice for this track.
DMR: You started off as a band member. Why did you go for being a solo artist?
Second Choice: I think it was several factors one is time. I played in different bands since 1992 and it was fun but it was also hard work and very little money compared to the effort put in. I think being in a band is a lifestyle choice almost a calling because it influences all aspects of your life. Since I always had a hard time sticking to just one type of music I always had side projects to not get bored. All this takes a lot of time and I guess eventually I got older and realized that it would be more fun to have a different career with a regular job and have the music more like a fun hobby. That way I also can be more free in my songwriting then when I was in a band, I no longer have to make my songwriting fit in a specific style or genre, instead I can go with what ever I feel like at the time. So for me taking that step back made music more fun.
DMR: You work on a diverse range of music. What motivates you to write new songs?
Second Choice: I start improvising on guitar or keyboard and see where it gets me. I usually just set a metronome and loop a section and start jamming, I try not to stop if I make mistakes and just keep going until I feel I have a couple of good ideas I can work with. I keep the good ideas and bin the rest. Then I try to get the riffs I got from jamming to work with each other and see where in an arrangement they would fit . Sometimes they don’t naturally fit with each others then I challenge myself with how I can bridge the gap between them. Usually when I have a general idea of where the song is going I can start arranging and build up to enhance my initial idea.
DMR: Would you like to explore any specific music genre in the future?
Second Choice: I don’t really have any specific plans its more what direction the next song takes me. I do like when I can combine opposing forces in a song so to speak, maybe something beautiful and melodic competing with some ugliness in the arrangement. I think that makes things fresh and exiting for me. Not everything have to be perfect and polished, sometimes ugliness has its own value.
DMR: Are you working on any new soundtrack?
Second Choice: Right this moment no, but I think I will start on a new song pretty soon.
DMR: Have you thought about any new concepts for your upcoming song?
Second Choice: No not yet, I think I have to sit down and put some riffs down and see where it gets me.
DMR: When will we get to listen to your new music?
Second Choice: Right now I am hoping that people listen to my current song By the Blackened Fern and hopefully commenting on what they think of it. I am really curious about that because once a song is finished hopefully it takes on a life of its own. It can mean different things to different people and that is the beauty of it, at least in my opinion. I don’t know when the next song is finished but in the mean time there are plenty of older songs in my back catalog that you can check out if you are curious. Collabs with different singers who brought their own magic to the songs.
DMR: Would you like to give any message to your fans?
Second Choice: If you like my music please subscribe. Also I am very curious about what you make of the song.
Thank you so much for taking out your time. And we wish all the very best for your upcoming tracks.
