On Sunday, May 4, the Brazilian police said that the authorities had arrested two people in connection with an alleged bombing plot at the free Lady Gaga concert in Rio de Janeiro. The free show on May 3rd at Rio de Janeiro was notably the biggest show of the artist’s career. The concert attracted more than 2 million people to the Copacabana Beach. The concert also saw people coming from all around the country together, screaming, singing, and dancing along. This is the highest number of concert attendees received by a female artist, confirmed by the authorities.

A spokesperson from Gaga’s team said on Monday that she and the team “learned about this alleged threat via media reports this morning. Prior to and during the show, there were no known safety concerns, nor any communication from the police or authorities to Lady Gaga regarding any potential risks.” The statement further added, “Her team worked closely with law enforcement throughout the planning and execution of the concert and all parties were confident in the safety measures in place.”

Security was heightened for Saturday’s concert. There were 5,200 military and police officers stationed along the beach where fans celebrated the pop star’s iconic songs, including the 2011 LGBTQ anthem ‘Born This Way’. According to Rio de Janeiro state police and Brazil’s Justice Ministry, there was a loosely outlined plot by a group known for spreading hate speech against the LGBTQ+ community and others. Authorities said the group had planned to set off homemade explosives at the event.
Police described the scheme as a “collective challenge” designed to gain attention on social media. They added that the group shared violent content with teens online, framing it as a way to create a sense of belonging. Two individuals have been arrested in connection with the alleged plot. One man was said to be the group’s leader in Rio Grande do Sul, on illegal weapons charges, and a teenager in Rio on child pornography charges. Police have not provided specific details about their involvement or how the group came to target Lady Gaga’s free concert. “Those involved were recruiting participants, including teenagers, to carry out integrated attacks using improvised explosives and Molotov cocktails,” the police commented.

Gaga, on the other hand, expressed her gratitude to the massive crowd via an Instagram post. Posting a photo carousel on the platform, Gaga captioned, “Nothing could prepare me for the feeling I had during last night’s show—the absolute pride and joy I felt singing for the people of Brazil. The sight of the crowd during my opening songs took my breath away.” “Your heart shines so bright, your culture is so vibrant and special, I hope you know how grateful I am to have shared this historical moment with you. An estimated 2.5 million people came to see me sing, the biggest crowd for any woman in history. I wish I could share this feeling with the whole world—I know I can’t, but I can say this—if you lose your way, you can find your way back if you believe in yourself and work hard. You can give yourself dignity by rehearsing your passion and your craft, pushing yourself to new heights— you can lift yourself up even if it takes some time. Thank you Rio for waiting for me to come back. Thank you little monsters all over the world. I love you. I will never forget this moment. Paws up little monsters. Obrigada. Love, Mother Monster,” the ‘Poker Face’ singer further added.
