Ed Sheeran and Blake Slatkin Shared Their Experience of Making ‘Drive’ for ‘F1’

Ed Sheeran is a global pop star who is best known for his romantic and pop English tracks, which are mostly melodic and slow. However, the artist made sure to show his grip in high-octane compositions by creating the rock anthem ‘Drive’, which is considered to be the best song from the ‘F1’ soundtracks.

Apple Original Film’s “F1” takes the audience to the fast-paced world of Formula One racing, and this adrenaline-fueled flick required an anthem that perfectly portrays that energy. Quite evident, an acoustic pop creation would not do justice to the movie, and so Sheraan and producing partner Blake Slatkin came up with this masterpiece.

However, Ed Sheeran has been a fan of the sports long before he got the chance to write the song for the movie. Slatkin watched the first 20 minutes of the film and immediately came up with the thought of Ed making a song for the movie. Sheraan also watched the footage for the film along with Jerry Bruckheimer. But the significance was more to this track as the producer decided it to be a specific part of the movie at the climax. This final sequence is important for the film, and giving Ed that responsibility worked pretty well.

Slatkin also called John Mayer for the project, who played guitar and also produced music for the song. Mayer is one of the song producers for the whole album. Knowing that it would be the final scene of the film, Ed was quite excited about the song. He said, “I sent a voice note to Blake which was essentially the chorus mumbled,” and explained how he used the mumbled pronunciation of ‘drive’ and expressed, “I wanted it to sound like an engine starting.”

The film starts with Led Zeppelin’s “Whole Lotta Love,” and there is no way to go but rock for this enticing theme. The pair of Sheeran and Slatkin created a big riff to match the rock energy and said, “We wanted it to make it feel in the zone of very riffed-based ‘70s rock music.” Slatkin praised Sheeran and said, “People don’t realize that Ed can rock like this. We had so many times when we were making music…but it never really fit the record.”

Being one of the greatest songwriters in the industry, Sheeran added, “You’re singing vowels and words form themselves in those points. When you have bullet points of lines from the film that will actually make up lyrics of the song, it’s quite easy to put song lyrics together.” Either way, the people are enjoying rockstar Ed Sheeran over his pop aura.
