Rihanna fans have been hopelessly waiting for new music! However, it seems like their desperate wait has come to an end as the ‘Diamond’ singer is soon releasing a brand new song. The song is titled ‘Friend of Mine’ and it is recorded for the Smurfs movie soundtrack.
On Wednesday (May 14), a new trailer for the movie came out. It revealed that Rihanna will release a new song called ‘Friend of Mine’ on Friday, May 16. The trailer gives a small preview of the track. In it, Rihanna sings over a soft, Afrobeats-style dance beat. You can hear her sing the line, “You’re looking like a friend of mine.” The song has a dreamy feel, mixing smooth vocals with a rhythmic groove. Fans are excited to hear the full version. This is one of Rihanna’s few music releases in recent years, making it even more special.
Rihanna is also starring in the film as a voice for Smurfette opposite John Goodman, James Corden, Nick Offerman, Sandra Oh, and more. The Smurfs movie is all set to release in theaters on July 18th. Along with Rihanna’s new song, the movie’s soundtrack will also include music from Tyla and a track titled ‘Higher Love’ by DJ Khaled, Cardi B, and DESI TRILL. ‘Higher Love’ was released in February and will be part of the full soundtrack when the movie comes out.
The new teaser starts with Rihanna in a studio. She is wearing a blue jacket and blue beads in her hair, matching her character Smurfette. She dances while recording lines for the movie. Then, the trailer shows a bit of the story. The Smurfs from Smurf Village have to travel to the real world. They go on a mission to save Papa Smurf. He has been kidnapped by the evil wizard Gargamel, who is played by J.P. Karliak. Papa Smurf is voiced by John Goodman. The teaser gives fans a fun look at what to expect from the movie’s adventure.

Apart from starring in the movie and making an original song for the soundtrack, RiRi is also an executive producer on this latest addition to the franchise of Smurfs. Back in 2023, Rihanna announced the project at CinemaCon with Paramount and Nickelodeon. At the time, she was pregnant with her second son, Riot Rose. She joked about working while expecting, saying, “I get to show up in my PJs in my third trimester.” Rihanna also said she hopes this role will earn her some “cool points” with her kids in the future. The moment showed her excitement and humor as she joined the fun animated movie project.
‘Friend of Mine’ will be Rihanna’s first new song since 2022’s ‘Lift Me Up’ from the Black Panther: Wakanda Forever soundtrack. She has not released an album since ‘Anti’ in 2016, which stayed at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart for two weeks.
